Hydrogen vehicles offer environmental benefits through lower pollution and zero exhaust pipe greenhouse gas emissions. The Commission wants to enable the EU-wide introduction of such cars and ensure their safe operation. These are the objectives of today’s proposal of the European Commission. More hydrogen cars will benefit citizens through reduced health impacts of transport. Common standards for hydrogen storage will guarantee the safety of the general public. The proposal has been developed involving extensive stakeholder discussion and has also been subject to an internet consultation. The proposal will now be considered by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.

Today the European Commission announced the adoption of a proposal for establishing a Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative (JTI).

Wednesday, 18 January 2006 — Air Products and its Spanish subsidiary Carburos Metalicos today announced that they have agreed to provide a grant to NTDA Energia, a leading company in hydrogen and fuel cell technology applications in Spain. This investment further demonstrates Air Products’ commitment to the development of the European hydrogen economy.

La capital de la Comunitat encabeza un proyecto que promueve los combustibles que no proceden del petróleo.

Una de las líneas de trabajo fundamentales de la Unión Europea en materia energética es apoyar la generación de energías limpias y el uso del hidrógeno tanto para abastecer a medios de transporte como para entornos domésticos. De acuerdo con esta iniciativa comienzan a surgir diversos proyectos que tratan de aunar esta recomendación comunitaria con soluciones de habitabilidad y el diseño de nuevos núcleos urbanos autosuficientes.

Following the successful first European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Operations Technical Review Days in 2005, the European Commission invites EU project coordinators to the TechDays’07. The event is organised by the European Commission with logistical support from the HFP Secretariat. It will take place from 10-11 October 2007 at the Courtyard Marriott in Brussels.

On April 20, 2007, the hydrogen and fuel cell “Implementation Plan – Status 2006” was published. This plan was developed by more than 100 members of the HFP Implementation Panel in the course of one year of intensive work.

The Research Community is to form a grouping to speak with one voice vis-à-vis the proposed Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) on fuel cells and hydrogen. The Advisory Council entrusted Alain Bugat, vice-chair of the HFP Advisory Council, with a mission towards the Research Community during its October 2006 meeting. Since then more than 30 research centres, universities and institutes throughout Europe have signed a Declaration of Intent. Additional research institutions and universities are still welcome to join. The work programme until summer 2007 includes drafting the mechanisms and structure to engage in the JTI as well as the content of the research grouping.

On 28 March 45 European companies have joined forces in a new international not-for-profit association as the first step to create a European public-private partnership – a Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) – for fuel cells and hydrogen. This association, called the JTI Industry Grouping, will be the key interlocutor and partner of the European Commission to create the JTI.

The 13th meeting of the AC, held on 19 January, dealt with the latest development towards a JTI on fuel cells and hydrogen, and with the endorsement of the HFP Implementation Plan.

On 29 March, the HFP presented its views on hydrogen and fuel cells to the European Commission in the framework of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan). The Commission had invited the HFP to this hearing, and had provided the HFP with a set of questions beforehand. Similar hearings have been organized by the Commission with the other energy related Technology Platforms and sectors.

A new era of research and development funding began today with the adoption of proposals by the European Commission to launch the first ever Europe-wide public-private R&D partnerships. The Commission presented two Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs) on Embedded Computing Systems and Innovative Medicines. These JTIs will pool industry, Member States and Commission resources into targeted research programmes. JTIs will move away from the traditional case-by-case public funding of projects approach towards large scale research programmes dedicated to common strategic research targets.
